INDUSTRY SPRINT: GOOGLE GUARD

Educating Google users on data privacy.

We were challenged by the Google team to "create a digital solution that will increase user privacy through data education."

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Role: UX/UI Designer
Duration: 24 hours
Tools: Figma
Skills: UX research, UI design, cross-disciplinary teamwork, accessibility testing, development handoff
Team: Daphne Chao (UX Designer), Emma Wittman (UX Designer), Marc Khuri-Yakub (Data Scientist) Alana Malinin (Data Scientist), Nikola Bogicevic (Developer)

CHALLENGE

We were challenged by the Google team to "create a digital solution that will increase user privacy through data education."

Throughout this hackathon, I was able to gain valuable experience working with team members from other fields to create a product within a time constraint.

PROBLEM SPACE & RESEARCH

By refining the problem space, we were able to find the main pain points of terms and conditions:

  • Long and difficult to read

  • “Forced” to accept to proceed to product

  • May compromise privacy and security

So we came up with the how might we question...

“How might we eliminate the burden of lengthy terms and conditions in order to increase user security for consumers?”

PERSONA

USER JOURNEY

GOAL: To quickly sign up for a new online tool that will help him complete is work more efficiently.

FRUSTRATIONS: Long onboarding process including agreeing to a comprehensive and hard to read Terms and Conditions.

NLP AND MACHINE LEARNING

By taking the input and running a loop to find flag words and cybersecurity threats - this method uses a neural network to analyze the word in the context of the sentence and will output the necessary information if the sentence(s) are flagged as “safe” or “harmful”.

Weighing the classes within the model to avoid bias, since safe is more likely to appear than harmful.

THE SOLUTION

How Guard enhances user privacy and security

  1. Awareness - Educates users on potential privacy and security risks

  2. Non-intrusive - Does not need to extract user’s personal data to function

NEXT STEPS
  • Expand to mobile application

  • High app usage among applications with tricky terms of service

  • Chrome Extension

  • Refining the model

    • Obtain more data by scraping

KEY LEARNINGS
  • Cross team collaboration

  • Leadership & communication

  • Experience designing across multiple platforms

  • Ability to evaluate the usability of new and existing products

  • Completing tasks and transforming them into intuitive, accessible, and easy to use designs
